Hike to Mnich
About the trip
The hike to Mnich (2,068 m a.s.l.) is a beautiful high-altitude trek that includes essential training elements, during which the guide will show you how to navigate high mountains using climbing techniques. Mnich is a peak that is technically straightforward yet incredibly spectacular, located right next to Morskie Oko in the Tatra Mountains. It is one of the symbols of the Tatras, perfect for your first Tatra hike using a rope and harness. The “across the plateau” hike (rated II on the UIAA scale) is led by a licensed Class I or II Tatra guide, who is usually also a TOPR rescuer.

The route we’ve chosen leads “across the slab,” rated II (UIAA scale). Technically, it usually poses no problem for fit hikers, yet the exposure in the upper section of Mnich offers a truly unforgettable experience. The route from the shelter above Morskie Oko to the shelter covers 7 km, involves 100 meters of climbing, and has an elevation gain of 765 meters.

Schedule
Meet the guide at the mountain hut by Morskie Oko at around 7 or 8 a.m. It takes about 2 hours to reach the shelter from Palenica Białczańska. The guide sets the exact time of the meeting based on weather conditions, approximately 2 days before the departure date. Outings take place only in good weather (no rain, snow, or thunderstorms).
After meeting at the mountain hut: a briefing on the hike, fitting equipment, and the ascent to Plecy Mnichowe and Wyżnia Mnichowa Przełączka. Putting on harnesses and ascending to the Upper Ledges, then to the summit dome itself. The guide leads the 100-meter climb, belaying the participants. The upper section of the ascent is the highlight of the climb up Mnich. This is primarily due to the incredible exposure. After reaching the summit, participants rappel down (the guide lowers them one by one). The descent is divided into two groups. First, the guide descends with two people. After the mountain ascent concludes with the rappel, he ascends again with the remaining two.
We usually return to the shelter around 2:00–3:00 p.m. The descent to Palenica Białczańska is on your own (about 1.5 hours).

Training Program
Let’s be clear: this is not a rock-climbing course in the Tatra Mountains. However, the instructor will teach you the following skills so you can safely reach the summit:
- putting on a harness,
- attaching the rope to the harness,
- Basic Rules for Belaying in the Tatra Mountains,
- the basics of rappelling,
- the basics of navigating high-altitude terrain.
About the Place
Over 100 years ago, Jan Gwalbert Pawlikowski and Maciej Sieczka were the first to climb Mnich, an event considered the beginning of mountaineering! Today, it is one of the most popular areas for mountaineering expeditions. The main reasons are its accessibility and the incredible view from the summit dome. Reaching Mnich can involve much more difficult routes. One example is the Classic Route, rated IV (UIAA).
